While some couples like to take things slow, actress and producer Kaley Cuoco and former tennis pro Ryan Sweeting did the opposite.
After first meeting in August 2013, Cuoco and Sweeting got engaged the next month and wed in December of that year. Like other couples in whirlwind courtships, The Flight Attendant star and her beau couldn't keep their hands off each other — whether on the red carpet, at the beach, or sitting courtside at a Lakers game.
Our favorite PDA moment, however? When they made out at Craig's in West Hollywood during a triple date with Haylie Duff and her then-boyfriend Matt Rosenberg and Ali Fedotowsky and her husband Kevin Manno (the other two couples were also kissing). Needless to say, it made for a great photo that Cuoco shared in a now-deleted post on Instagram, per E! News.
However, just as fast as Cuoco and Sweeting's romance took off, it quickly ended. By September 2015, the couple split and filed for divorce after nearly two years of marriage. The Based on a True Story actress moved on, marrying her second husband, Karl Cook, in 2018 before their separation in 2021 and divorce in 2022.
Since her split from Cook, she has been enjoying parenthood and date nights with fellow actor and partner Tom Pelphrey, whom she welcomed daughter Matilda Carmine Pelphrey with in March 2023. Amazing how much can change in a decade, right?
Here's a look back at Kaley Cuoco and Ryan Sweeting's relationship.
Following a summer fling with British actor Henry Cavill in July 2013, a mutual friend set Cuoco and Sweeting up on a blind date one month later, according to E! News.
"I had kind of an interesting situation over the summer, and I was kind of in a weird place, and a very close mutual friend of ours said, 'Oh my god, have you met this guy Ryan?'" she recalled during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. "I was just not in a good place to meet anyone. I said, 'I'm not ready. I'm taking time away from love for a while.' I was very sad."
Sweeting was in Los Angeles to visit his doctor after suffering a back injury, and their friend said, "'You know, he's coming to town. You've got one day to meet him, have a drink, and meet him.'"
The Meet Cute star agreed to go to dinner with him, and the next day, he moved in.
The Meet Cute star agreed to go to dinner with him, and the next day, he moved in with her. Within days of hanging out, Cuoco knew he was "the one."
"By day two, I was like, 'Oh my god.' It was so unbelievable," she revealed, per E! News. "I said, 'This is it, this is it.'"
When you know, you know. The couple got engaged in September 2013, with her rep confirming the news to People.
The lovebirds tied the knot on New Year's Eve 2013 in front of 150 unsuspecting guests during a fire-and-ice-themed ceremony in California. Weeks later, Sweeting opened up about being a newlywed, praising his new wife at a Delta Airlines Grammy party.
"We couldn't be happier. It's the best, the best, moments of our lives," Sweeting said in 2014, according to People, adding that marrying Cuoco has made his whole outlook on life "a lot more positive."
Cuoco declared that she's "not nuts" in response to criticism about the rapid pace of her relationship and shared how the surprise wedding ceremony came together on The Late Show with David Letterman.
"We were throwing a New Year's Eve party anyway, and I was like, 'Let's throw a ceremony in the party and not tell anybody,'" she reportedly told the late-night host during a 2014 appearance.
She added, "We texted a little bit. Dinner was great, and then he moved in the next day. I know, it sounds so slutty, but it wasn't. It all did move quite fast on paper, but we really did know."
Sweeting agreed, revealing in a rare interview that he knew Cuoco was his soul mate.
"I had never really felt that feeling before, really," he previously said at the Grammy event. "The second I got here, I didn't want to go home. We spent every minute together, and I still haven't left from our blind date."
After 21 months of marriage, Cuoco and Sweeting split in September 2015. The Big Bang Theory alum filed for divorce, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason — and according to the couple's rep at the time, their separation was a mutual decision, per People.
"Kaley Cuoco and Ryan Sweeting have mutually decided to end their marriage," read the full statement. "They ask for privacy at this time. No further statement will be issued regarding this matter."
Sweeting remained silent about what may have led to the divorce, while Cuoco was more forthcoming with her feelings. During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in February 2015, the actress told the host she was in a "much better place."
"You know, it's been rough, but things are going good," Cuoco said, as reported by People. "I'm much, much better now. I'm in a much better place than I was."
Following the 2015 announcement of their separation, Cuoco and Sweeting finalized their divorce in May 2016, according to court documents obtained by People. Per the documents, the exes had signed a prenuptial agreement, with Cuoco keeping their Tarzana, California home and their Santa Barbara area beach house.
In April 2018, Cuoco opened up about what went wrong in her and Sweeting's marriage.
"I married someone for the first time who completely changed," Cuoco told Cosmopolitan. "The person I ended up with was not the person I originally met. And that wasn't my fault — that was his."
