Marvin Jerome Barnes (July 27, 1952 – September 8, 2014) was an American professional basketball player who played for the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers. Barnes was a 6’8″ forward for Providence College, where he excelled. In 1973, he became the first player in NCAA history to score 10 points on 10 field goal attempts. He is now tied for second place with Kenny Walker, who went 11-for-11 in the NCAA playoffs in 198In 1973-74, he was the most successful player in the country in terms of rebounding. Barnes scored 52 points in a single game against Austin Peay on December 15, 1973, shattering the previous single-game school record. He was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the second overall selection in the first round of the 1974 NBA Draft and by the Spirits of St. Louis with the second overall choice in the first round of the 1974 American Basketball Association Draft. Barnes chose the American Basketball Association over the National Basketball Association, and he played for the Spirits in the American Basketball Association from 1974 to 1976 before moving on to the National Basketball Association from 1976 to 1980. His biggest professional success came in the American Basketball Association, when he played for the Spirits and was voted Rookie of the Year for the 1974–75 season. With 27 two-point field goals in a game, he also holds the ABA record for most such field goals in a game. One of his divisions was named after him by the American Bar Association 2000, the organization’s second iteration. Bad News earned him the moniker because of his numerous off-court issues, which began while he was a senior at Central High School and continued throughout his career. He was a member of a group that made an unsuccessful attempt to steal a bus. It wasn’t hard to recognise him because he was sporting his state championship jacket, which had his name stitched on it. He was forced to leave the NBA due to his drug usage and ended up on the streets of San Diego, California in the early 1980s due to his drug addiction. After completing a number of rehabilitation programmes, he began reaching out to youngsters in the South Providence neighbourhood where he grew up, telling them not to make the same errors he did. Providence College retired his jersey in March 2008, in recognition of his contributions to the programme, along with those of Ernie DiGregorio and Jimmy Walker. He still has the school’s single-game scoring record of 52 points, which he shares with MarShon Brooks (who has since broken it). Barnes, who was 62 at the time of his death, passed away on September 8, 2014.
